The Prime Minister’s office said by e-mail that the two men spoke by phone on Saturday, but the length of the conversation is unknown.
According to the firm, the two men would have reiterated the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Trump had discussed together after the victory of the Republican candidate in November. The Prime Minister took the opportunity to invite the new president to visit Canada at the first opportunity.
The two heads of government “hope to meet soon,” the cabinet added.
Some of the Prime Minister’s senior advisers told about Mr. Trump’s organization in the weeks leading up to the president’s inauguration on Friday. Several Canadian officials expressed their fears about the consequences of the republican economic program on Canada.
Mr. Trump is committed to renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mr. Trump’s chief spokesman also recently suggested that the Canadian auto sector may have to pay tariffs.
