He created many portraits of her.
In the spring of 1954, Picasso met a 19-year-old Silvett David, and within a few months she was his Muse, inspiring artist on a series of paintings, reports the Chronicle.info with reference for a Fresher.
Of all the muses (and they were many) who had his creative hand in this or that period of life, it is one of the most mysterious. So who is this Silvett? And why Picasso painted her, but did not draw Brigitte Bardot?
The French Silvett now 83 years old. After marriage she changed her name to Lydia Corbett. Her mother was an artist, and my father studied art. As a child she lived on the Ile du Levant off the southern coast of France, and during the war her family moved to a safer location in the Eastern mountains.
Then she lived with her fiancé Toby Ellinikon in the town of Vallauris on the French Riviera. There she met Picasso.
Picasso later recalled how Silvett this little girl with a charming pony-tail tied high on the back of the head, every day she passed by his Studio, and he could not pay attention to it. He began to draw her first memory, but then she happened to notice that the artist holding a sketch image of her face. “It was like an invitation,” she recalled later. Picasso wanted to paint her, and Silvett began to come to his Studio.
She was sitting in his rocking chair and spent hours posing for him.
Have you heard about the giant sculpture of Picasso’s on Bleecker street in new York? It’s Silvett. Picasso was in love with her image, which seemed to him the very image of youth, freshness and femininity. Besides, this ponytail:
“I tied a tail to his father, whom I rarely saw, because he had another family”, — said Silvett. One day he looked Greek drama in Paris and he liked the hairstyle of the girl in the play, visible from a distance with a high tail. Here Silvett and adopted her matchless hair, which fascinated her father.
Silvett inspired by Picasso more than 60 works, the collection of which he presented in Paris. These works deserve recognition, and many in the art world wondered what kind of man was this young Mona Lisa. Even Brigitte Bardot, according to Silvet adopted her image, when she saw a Picasso painting.
In his biography of Bridget recalls that he had asked Picasso to paint her portrait, but he refused because he already had Silvett.
As told by Silvett “It was very funny. I saw Brigitte Bardot with Roger Vadim in Cannes. Toby and I went there to see the festival. And we noticed each other when walking around the city. She had brown hair, and after she saw me, she became a blonde. She was a beautiful blonde … I Think she found out about me from the magazine “Paris Match”, and then went to Picasso. She was prettier than me, sexier. I was not sexual, I felt pretty awkward next to a great man. And Picasso probably noticed it”.
Over time, critics began to speak of “the Period of the horse’s tail,” how about something minor in the career of Picasso – the artist just had to escape after a serious moral crisis when his beloved woman left françoise Gilot.
Silvett was not mistress of Picasso, but that does not mean that the drawings of that period are devoid of emotional feelings.
They remained friends until the artist’s death. Today the Muse Picasso is a talented artist and ceramics sculptor, lives and works in South Devon, England, where it is known under the name of Lydia Corbett. To Picasso, she left the child’s feelings, he was her father. The time they spent together very much influenced her own work.
She has an online store where you can buy her wonderful paintings, watercolors, pottery and printmaking.
She even wrote a book “I was Silvetti” about his unforgettable meeting with a great artist.
