A massive protest broke out in response to a new assignment in the government
Thousands of Czechs again filled the center of Prague and other cities in protest against the appointment of a new Minister of justice, who, according to them, may intervene in a criminal case involving the Prime Minister. About it reports Reuters.
Last week the Minister of justice was appointed Marie Benesova. According to the protesters, she will try to protect Prime Minister Andrew Babish, who could potentially stand trial for fraud with EU funds.
In 2008, the family of Babish bought an old mansion, which decided to convert into a luxury conference centre “stork’s Nest”. The amount of reconstruction was estimated at 350 million euros, of which 50 million amounted to EU grant to support small business.
According to a report by the European Directorate for the prevention of abuse and fraud (OLAF), false and incomplete data were provided in the application for the EU grant on the hotel-conference complex the “stork’s Nest”.
Babish rejects the accusations and calls the case politically motivated. He said that the purpose of Benesova is not a threat to the justice system.
The protest on Monday was more than a week ago. Organizers estimated that at least 20 thousand people filled the old town square of Prague. The police gave no official estimates.
The protesters called for an independent justice system, demanded the resignation of Benesova.
Thousands of people gathered in Brno, the second largest city in the country, and in Ostrava.
