Internet memes have a negative impact on health, scientists say
Researchers from Loughborough University in Britain found that Internet memes can have a negative impact on mental and physical health.
Scientists are concerned about, and even filed a petition in the British Parliament. They warn that too many people spread in social networks memes that make fun of and insult others for their race, weight, religion, lifestyle, etc. So do memes, trolling, bullying and bodyshaping commonplace.
Roling — posting provocative messages to cause conflicts between members, insults;
Bullying — intimidation, bullying;
Bodyshaping — criticism for the appearance that go beyond the conventional standards of beauty.
Scientists also warn that regular viewing of memes may lead to obesity, because it shows the consumption of junk food in a positive light.
“For most of us it is unacceptable to talk about the fact that yesterday we ate a chocolate cake. But if someone will do this meme, then over time it starts to look quite normal,” explains the researcher Ashley Casey.
