The Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern said that in the country from July 2019 will be banned disposable plastic bags.
About it reports TV channel RNZ.
The announcement about the ban was made Prime Minister on the beach layolo Bay in Wellington.
“We use hundreds of millions of disposable plastic bags — the whole mountain of packages,” said Ardern.
These plastic bags result in polluting the coastal and marine environment and cause serious damage to all kinds of marine fauna.
The New Zealand government will develop a phased plan avoid disposable packages, as well as determine what types of products will be banned.
Authorities believe that the program of gradual compulsory refusal from plastic bags cost less and will be more effective than the imposition of fines.
Note that plastic bags banned in more than 40 countries. In Ukraine the issue of the ban is periodically discussed since 2012, but real progress yet.
Recall, according to researchers at the University of Minnesota, 80% of tap water on the planet is contaminated with plastic. And even in the ocean found “junk spots”, consisting of plastic waste, and covering a huge area of water surface.
