Electricity imports from Russia threaten Ukraine’s energy security, it should be banned
This was stated by people’s Deputy of Ukraine Mikhail Bondar during a briefing in the Verkhovna Rada on 3 October, the publication of the Facts.
The Deputy reminded that on September 18 the Verkhovna Rada adopted amendments to the legislation which allowed the import of electricity from countries not members of the European Energy Community. The author of this amendment, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on energy and utilities Andriy Gerus claimed that the import will be carried out from Belarus, however, on 1 October took delivery of the first electric power imports from Russia.
“Literally 18 September adopted the law on the nuclear theme, in which is inserted an amendment that had nothing to do with this law, and concerned the electricity market. The so-called amendment had to be made to allow for a country-aggressor Russia be able to supply electricity to Ukraine. Told at the time of adoption of this law, that is the supply of electricity from Moldova, Belarus. And there is such a capacity, these countries do not have, and found that it is the supply of electricity directly from the aggressor country of Russia,” — said Bondar.
In his opinion, the import of electricity from Russia will hit domestic generating companies, have a negative impact on the operation of coal mines, will provoke the growth of the debt to the miners, and also threatens the energy security of the country as a whole. He therefore intends to initiate a bill to repeal this legislation.
“As Chairman of the Subcommittee of the coal industry, is preparing a bill to remedy these shameful changes that handed a majority on September 18. I hope that colleagues who share my opinion will join in the signing of this law and yet, we here in Parliament, to prove that this error should be corrected,” said Cooper.
