The Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday it has every reason to believe that the Canadian Robert Hall hostage was executed by Filipino Islamist group Abu Sayyaf.
“It is with deep sadness that everything leads me to believe that a Canadian citizen, Robert Hall, held hostage in the Philippines since September 21, 2015, was killed by his captors,” said Justin Trudeau. A first hostage, John Ridsdel, was beheaded on April 25 and Mr. Trudeau said Canada would not pay ransom for hostages, as claimed by the Abu Sayyaf group.
The terrorist group had warned he would kill the hostages if a ransom of several million dollars was not paid.
Robert Hall was part of a group of four hostages that included mining executive John Risdel, executed in April. The two men were kidnapped in their hotel in the Philippines with a woman from the country and a Norwegian.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had invited members of the G7 last month to refuse to pay ransoms for hostages.
An official statement is expected shortly.
