The international relations Committee of the British house of lords believes that the threat of use of nuclear weapons in the world higher than during the cold war
The Committee on international relations of the house of lords of the UK Parliament warns of the threat of nuclear war. This is stated in the report of the Committee, said Hvil.
“The absence of significant agreements on arms control in combination with a rupture of diplomatic relations between countries and new technologies increase the likelihood of use of nuclear weapons”, — the document says.
As noted, the Committee released a report ahead of the meeting of the UN on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, scheduled for next week in new York.
“We are now perilously close to the globe without any agreements on arms control, which paves the way for a new arms race and increases the risk of use of nuclear weapons”, — said the Chairman of the international Affairs Committee of the house of lords of the British Parliament David Howell.
The Committee on international relations of the house of lords believes that the collapse of relations between States with nuclear weapons, new features and technology combined with the lack of communication and understanding mean that the risk of use of nuclear weapons is now greater than during the cold war.
Among the main concerns, the paper called “misunderstandings, miscalculations or errors, which may lead to the use of nuclear weapons”.
The concern is the proliferation of digital communications and the use of “unreasonable nuclear rhetoric” which “can lead to misunderstanding.”
The Committee called on the British government to “encourage a broader dialogue among all States possessing nuclear weapons, on the question of nuclear risk and to reduce global tensions”.
In the report it is recommended to keep the Iranian agreement.
In addition, the Committee notes that the discussions in NATO contributed to any revival of the Treaty on intermediate and shorter-range missiles, which refused the US and Russia, or at least prevented the deployment of medium-range missiles in Europe.”
