Saint-Leonard-d’aston — Coming to start a new life as mayor of Saint-Léonard-d’aston, Jean-Guy Doucet will be honored Tuesday for his presidency to Moisson Mauricie/Centre-du-Québec from 2011 to 2017. The governor general of Canada, Julie Payette will award the Medal of the sovereign for the volunteers.
“I welcome it with great excitement and pride. It is a nice recognition after several years of volunteering”, he confided to the margins of the ceremony, which will take place at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa.
The Medal of the sovereign for volunteers recognizes the achievements of volunteers to exceptional Canadians across the country, in a wide range of areas.
Upon his arrival as president of the board of directors, Harvest was in the face of great challenges so that the premises no longer correspond to the needs and the financial situation was difficult. At the end of its mandate, the organization was housed in a building furnished in order to ensure a safe work and efficient.
“In addition, we acquired a sorting centre. Thanks to the actions of Mr. Doucet, of the directors and the team, Harvest is managed to diversify its sources of funding. We were able to rapidly develop the implementation of the recovery Program in supermarkets to increase the amount of food and the variety of the products distributed to the vulnerable people of the Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, pointed out his successor, Jean Pellerin, who is full of praise for the recipient of the Medal for his skills.
For his part, Jean-Guy Doucet said he was proud of the 79 member organizations that help the 29 000 people, of which 9600 children, had recourse to food aid each month on the two shores.
“I’m proud that my involvement has allowed for people to eat in addition to promote the implementation of hundreds of people in social reintegration in order to enable them to develop their skills in a work environment that is valuing and respectful. I feel honored to have worked with passionate people, people of heart,” says the principal.
With regard to its new responsibilities, the p’tit gars de Saint-Léonard-d’aston said to find the same kind of challenge to Harvest. “Besides, the mayor of a small municipality, it is a lot of volunteer work. There is some compensation, but that is not at all to the height that it requires. But I knew that and I accepted it like that, there is no problem”, he noted.
